You are being asked to participate in a research study about legal issues inside of the Second Life® virtual world. The purpose of this research study is to understand how Second Life residents experience, understand, act on, and attempt to resolve disputes arising with other residents in-world.

The research procedure involves an interview that will last approximately 45-90 minutes. With your permission, the “chat log” from this interview will be copied from the Second Life client and saved in a password-protected computer database.

There are no foreseeable risks or discomforts associated with this study. There are no direct personal benefits from participating in this study, but your participation will give you the opportunity to contribute to a greater understanding of social life in Second Life and other virtual worlds.

Participation in this study is voluntary. You may refuse to participate, or you may discontinue your involvement at any time without penalty. You may choose to skip a question, and you may ask me not to include some or all of you responses in the test that I will copy into the study database.

No information that personally identifies you will ever be disclosed. Your real screen (avatar) name will not be used in any reports or publications resulting from this study. You will not be asked for your real-life name as part of this study.

This research has been reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board (“IRB”) at Elon University, North Carolina.
